Former San Clemente High School volleyballstar Brandon Taliaferro watched his step brother Arik Metzger at this summer’s Junior Olympics tryouts and noticed that most of the players on the court were from San Clemente, Dana Point and San Juan Capistrano. “It reminded me of how much talent there is down here and how there isn’t a big local volleyball club,” said Taliaferro, an alternate on the 2008 USA Olympic Gold Medal Winning Men’s Indoor Volleyball Team, four-year varsity setter at SCHS (Class of ‘96) and four-time All-American at UCLA where he led the Bruins to two NCAA National Championships.
So, Taliaferro, a San Clemente resident and owner of A to Z Leak Detection, has decided to start a new boys volleyball club in South Orange County called 949 Athletics along with Justin Deblasio.
“When I played club, I drove to Newport Beach, Los Angeles and even Santa Barbara to play club volleyball,” said Taliaferro. “There is a ton of talent here in the Beach Cities area and I want to give kids the option of staying close to home to play. I am excited to give something back.”
The Club will field teams of all abilities, from ages 10-18 years old. Tryouts are set for Saturday, Sept. 12 at San Juan Capistrano Sports Park, 25925 Camino Del Avion, San Juan Capistrano.
